Italy's data protection authority, the Garante, launched an investigation into applications accessing users' microphones to collect and sell data without express consent. The investigation is in response to reports from users who have seen targeted advertising on their smartphones after speaking on the specific topic. The Garante will analyze commonly downloaded apps for clear privacy notices and proper consent collection in collaboration with the Special Privacy and Technological Fraud Unit of the Guardia di Finanza.
