The Swedish Data Inspection Board decided that the country’s AB Svenska Spel, a gambling organization, “could be” violating the privacy of users and breaking both Swedish and EU law by keeping tabs via its Playscan system on potentially problematic gamblers, Bloomberg BNA reports. Advocates for those languishing in gambling addiction and those who stand to gain from bettor’s losses see the move as a “setback,” but analysts encourage critics to see the bigger picture. The situation is “about collecting consent, rather than how and if you can use monitoring programs,” said Bird & Bird Stockholm’s Henrik Bergstrom. “In this case, this means that you would need a consent to the processing of the customer's personal data that is voluntary, specific, unambiguous and informed.”
