Federal Trade Commission Research Director of the Office of Technology Research and Investigation Joseph Calandrino, FTC Chief Technologist Lorrie Cranor, CIPT, and several others from the agency will participate in the Workshop on Technology and Consumer Protection, Calandrino reports in an agency blog post. The May 2017 workshop, co-located with the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, “will explore computer science topics with an impact on consumers,” its website states. "Research in these areas can promote consumer welfare and inform relevant policy," Calandrino adds. "It may offer insight into emerging technologies and their impact on consumers ... Such research can advance the FTC’s consumer protection mission and make a positive difference in the lives of consumers." The program committee is accepting research papers through Jan. 10, the report states.
