The Federal Trade Commission has issued Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act guidance for education technology providers and schools about protecting students’ privacy and safeguarding their personal data as many engage in remote learning amid the COVID-19 outbreak. FTC Division of Consumer & Business Education Attorney Lisa Weintraub Schifferle said COPPA generally requires parental consent before information can be collected from children under 13, but that ed tech services should maintain the same level of care for students over age 13.
