The U.S. Federal Trade Commission will be hosting a series of public hearings between September 2018 and January 2019 to see whether consumer protection enforcement laws and the agency’s enforcement priorities need to be adjusted due to evolving business practices and advances in technology. For the hearings, the agency will accept comments on topics such as the intersection between privacy, big data, and competition and consumer protection issues on communication, information, and medical technology networks. “Their budget is sort of insanely low,” Director of the Privacy and Data Project at the Center for Democracy and Technology Michelle De Mooy said. “Making sure they are able to be effective, now that they are faced with so many emerging technologies, is absolutely crucial for effective consumer protection.”
