For IAPP Knowledge Manager Emily Leach, CIPP/US, the release of Webbmedia Group CEO Amy Webb’s 2015 Top Tech Trends—including data privacy among them—sparked a three-year-old memory and represents a clear indicator of the shift in mindset surrounding privacy. Leach writes in this Privacy Perspectives post about being shut down by Webb at the 2012 Online News Association conference over the potential privacy issues with that year’s top picks. “Older people seem to be concerned about their data. The overwhelming number of people using this stuff have no perception … they don’t understand the distinction between public and private,” Webb said, adding, “Now may be a good time for you guys to pivot.” Three years later, with the IAPP growing faster than ever, it seems the pivot is on the other foot.
