Le Défenseur des Droits (Defendant of Rights) is an authority in charge, among others, of receiving claims of individuals who consider that their rights and liberties have been breached in various matters, including in case of discrimination or in the use of public services. It is also in charge of the protection of the interests of children.

Back in 2011, it was even considered that it might be the authority in charge of supervision of the protection of personal data, but the CNIL remained.

The two authorities work hand-in-hand and have signed on January 16 a coordination agreement in order to organize their joint work, in particular for the handling of claims. They also intend to work on two large projects: the release of a framework decision on professional alert systems (whistleblowing) and a reflexion on the creation of a national file of children in jeopardy.
