Motherboard and investigative journalists at DeSmog UK uncovered documents revealing companies have been using private firms to dig up social media information to discredit fracking protesters. British chemical company INEOS, UK Oil and Gas, and Europa Oil and Gas have been working to stop protesters from trespassing on their land by using personal information found on social media networks to justify banning any type of demonstration. The documents found the social media surveillance focused primarily on Facebook, with Motherboard detailing several posts that have been featured in cases where the companies attempted to shut down rallies against them.
