During an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes," former U.S. National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger discussed China's recent moves on privacy and data security. Pottinger said China's Personal Information Protection Law is less about protecting individuals' personal data but more the National People's Congress of China seeking access and control over it. He said the NPC has used the PIPL as "a machete" and "sort of whacked its way toward the headquarters and C-suites of all of these big tech firms" with the goal of accruing data.
