Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner Stephen Kai-yi Wong announced a formal investigation into Cathay Pacific airline’s data breach, which impacted 9.4 million passengers, the South China Morning Post reports. Wong said, “The compliance investigation is going to examine in detail, among others, the security measures taken by Cathay Pacific to safeguard its customers’ personal data and the airline’s data retention policy and practice.” Earlier, the previous chief, Allan Yam-wang Chiang, criticized the current commissioner for failing to adequately investigate and noted a significant drop in the number of investigations and enforcement notices issued by the commissioner’s office.
