The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency experienced a “major privacy incident” after it was discovered it shared the information of 2.5 million disaster survivors, The Washington Post reports. A report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General found the breach occurred when FEMA disclosed the data of those who used the agency’s Transitional Sheltering Assistance program. A DHS official said 1.8 million people had their banking information and addresses exposed, while another 725,000 only had their addresses revealed. The individuals affected included victims of Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Harvey and the 2017 California wildfires. The DHS official added it is unclear whether any of the victims have had their information used in a malicious manner. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
