At the recent IAPP Privacy Academy and CSA Congress, women from the privacy and security industries met to talk about what it is to be a woman in their respective professions. Led by industry veterans McAfee CPO Michelle Dennedy, CIPP/US, CIPM; Bank of America Senior VP and CPO Christine Frye, CIPP/US, CIPM; Wickr CEO Nico Sell; Intuit CPO Barb Lawler, CIPP/US, CIPM, and Cisco Compliance and Data Privacy Leader Evelyn DeSouza, more than 100 women swapped stories, shared advice and networked. Dennedy told attendees that while women are socialized to be nice, sometimes you have to “be prepared to be a little hated” to get the job done. DeSouza told attendees, “Don’t play it safe … do something dangerous.”
