Sources close to negotiations in Washington said it is unlikely a federal U.S. privacy law will appear before Congress before the end of the year, Reuters reports. Lawmakers have not been able to agree on whether a federal rule should preempt state laws, what information should be deemed private and the matter of consent, the three sources said; however, there is still an outside shot one discussion draft could be heard before 2019 concludes. “This will be tremendously challenging ... companies need to really focus on complying with California now because there is not going to be a life raft from a federal level,” said Davis & Gilbert Partner Gary Kibel, CIPP/US.
