A federal investigation into Russian interference in the recent U.S. election has found Twitter to be one of the most valuable platforms used to spread misinformation via botnets and fake accounts, Politico reports. While Twitter’s “pro-consumer privacy policies” state that “content deleted by account holders (e.g., Tweets) is generally not available,” law enforcement agencies have requested access to the company’s data, including deleted tweets. Twitter is said to have aggressively enforced a policy of “permanent deletion,” the report states, but spokespeople for the company pointed Politico to Twitter’s data retention and privacy policy, which says, “Once an account has been deactivated, there is a very brief period in which we may be able to access account information, including Tweets.”
