The Wall Street Journal reports it obtained documents showing U.S. federal agencies attempted to distribute COVID-19 tests from Chinese genetics company BGI Group despite warnings the company’s products presented privacy risks. An FBI special agent warned a Department of Health and Human Services advisory committee that BGI had a history of misusing personal data, and gene-sequencing machines the company wanted to sell to U.S. labs could be used to catalog patients’ DNA. Similar warnings came from other law enforcement and intelligence officials.
