IBM has announced that IBM Watson Health will work with the Food and Drug Administration on a study to determine blockchain's ability to protect health care data, ZDNet reports. "The research initiative is a two-year agreement between the FDA and IBM which aims to create and promote a 'secure, efficient and scalable exchange of health data using blockchain technology,'" the report states. If the blockchain use is successful, "IBM's Watson Health unit could stand to drive more business and profit by creating a scalable, decentralized platform for sharing medical data in a secure manner," the report adds. The pair will share initial research results later in 2017.
