Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai announced his plans to roll back Obama-era regulations that would allow net neutrality and treat broadband providers as a Title II common carrier service. An FCC press release stated Pai's plans will "return the U.S. to the bipartisan, light-touch framework that preserved a free and open internet for almost 20 years." The FCC said the process will be transparent and invites public input. Pai argues the reclassification scheme from 2015 has hurt Americans' online privacy "because Title II completely stripped the FTC of its authority over broadband providers' privacy and data security practices." Federal Trade Commission Acting Chairman Maureen Ohlhausen praised Pai's announcement, calling it "an important step toward restoring the FTC's ability to protect broadband subscribers from unfair and deceptive practices, including violations of their privacy."
