The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation used facial recognition to identify and arrest a suspect in the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol, The Verge reports. An affidavit states crowdsourced images from the riots, searched on the web using “an open source facial recognition tool,” led agents to the public Instagram page of Stephen Chase Randolph’s girlfriend, in which he was pictured in posts. Agents then identified Randolph’s full name through Facebook accounts and cross-referenced his identity with state driving license records.
