A dental computer technician’s house was raided by the FBI after he allegedly violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, The Daily Dot reports. Justin Shafer discovered a security weakness in a set of dental records when he found a publicly available Fire Transfer Protocol server. The Texas technician was attempting to remedy another issue when he discovered the server containing a directory with patient data. Shafer alerted the server’s parent company, Patterson Dental, which then claimed Shafer had “exceeded authorized access” when he accessed the public server, an illegal act under the CFAA. The incident highlights concerns by many that the CFAA can incriminate well-meaning security researchers. Shafer has also helped uncover an encryption vulnerability in HenryShein Dental, a finding that helped lead to a consent order on the company by the Federal Trade Commission.
