The Washington Post reports the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been using state driver’s license databases for facial-recognition searches without the driver’s knowledge or consent. Neither Congress nor state legislatures have approved distributing driver information using this technology. San Francisco and Somerville, Massachusetts, have banned the use of facial-recognition technology by law enforcement and public agencies. Officials from the agencies are expected to testify at an upcoming House Committee on Homeland Security hearing on the agencies' use of the technology later this week.
