Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray said the inability of law enforcement to access encrypted data on electronic devices is something he is calling an “urgent public safety issue,” Reuters reports. Speaking at the International Conference on Cyber Security, Wray added that for fiscal year 2017, the FBI was unable to access data from nearly 7,800 devices despite having technical tools and proper legal authority. In what is seen as an ongoing divide between law enforcement and technology companies, the issue of accessing data without weakening cybersecurity persists. Wray said the solution would rest upon “significant innovation,” adding “but I just do not buy the claim that it is impossible.”
