Smartphones will likely be the avenue where most users are exposed to facial recognition technology, according to Consumer Reports. Apple’s newest iPhone is rumored to be equipped with facial recognition services, making it the latest company to use the technology for security purposes. Security professionals believe facial recognition can make consumers safer, as the technology is a better form of verification than passwords and PINs. Facial recognition still has a few barriers it needs to solve, such as becoming more widely available and ensuring it is not fooled by a photo or a video of the user’s face. Meanwhile, Apple’s soon-to-be-released iOS 11 will include new features that make it even more difficult to extract data from a device.
