Fortune reports that Facebook plans to appeal an Austrian court order that requires it to impose its national hate speech law globally. A Vienna-based appeals court ordered the social network to take down comments posted about the leader of Austria's Green Party, not just in Austria, but around the world. The case parallels other instances where national laws conflict with global technology companies, such as "right to be forgotten" takedown requests, for example. Stanford University's Daphne Keller said the Austrian ruling may be "dangerous and short-sighted" because it could prompt other nations to compel companies to impose local laws on Facebook. "This ruling sends a signal to courts around the world that they, too, can enforce their national laws to ban speech around the world," Keller explained.
