The rise of fake news and online harassment has only grown in recent years, particularly on social networks like Facebook. With mounting scrutiny and criticism about how social networks amplify fake news and deal with online harassment, Facebook has released a new report on how it plans to deal with threats to civic engagement. "In brief," the report states, "we have had to expand our security focus from traditional abusive behavior, such as account hacking, malware, spam and financial scams, to include more subtle and insidious forms of misuse, including attempts to manipulate civic discourse and deceive people. These are complicated issues and our responses will constantly evolve, but we wanted to be transparent about our approach." The report also features a section on targeted data collection and some of the steps Facebook is taking in this area.
