Speaking at a hearing with European Union lawmakers, a Facebook official said it appears no European user data was shared with Cambridge Analytica, Bloomberg reports. While Facebook is unable to make any conclusive statements at this point, the social media company said evidence suggests that the contract with Cambridge Analytica was to collect the data of Americans to use in U.S. political campaigns. Previously, Facebook had stated that 2.7 million Europeans may have had their user data improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica. Ursula Pachl, deputy director general of European consumer group BEUC, said, “I have to say I was a bit surprised by the statements,” adding, “This is a contradiction, I don’t know how it can be explained.”
