Reuters reports Facebook will be restricting the users protected by the EU General Data Protection Regulation to only those in North America and Europe. The move means 1.5 billion users from Africa, Asia, Australia and Latin America will not be covered by the rules or able to file complaints with Ireland’s data protection commissioner but rather will be governed by U.S. privacy laws. Meanwhile, MEPs are arguing the GDPR may not be enough to protect EU citizens’ privacy following the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica revelations, while privacy and security professionals believe the impending rules will lead to an increase in lawsuits.
