Tech executive Chris Larsen is paying nearly $4 million for hundreds of high-definition security cameras to be installed around San Francisco, California, The New York Times reports. Under the project started in 2012, neighborhoods decide where to put the cameras — placed on private property with permission — and a neighborhood coalition monitors footage. The footage is deleted after 30 days. Larsen, who co-founded the coalition Californians for Privacy Now, said he hopes this alternative security system becomes a model for other cities.
