More than 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries had their data posted on a hacking forum, Business Insider reports. Personal data uploaded to the site included phone numbers, Facebook identification credentials, full names, locations, birthdates and some email addresses. Here are more developments as the situation unfolds:

  • The National Post reports approximately 3.49 million Canadian accounts were affected by the breach and a spokesperson from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said the regulator is "actively following up" with Facebook.
  • Facebook Product Management Director Mike Clark posted the social network's perspective on the breach of its databases that exposed data on more than 533 million users. Clark indicated the data exposure was "not through hacking our systems but by scraping it from our platform," noting the security issue from 2019 was patched and "no longer exists."
  • A Facebook spokesman said the company has no plans to notify the more than 530 million users who were affected by its recent data breach, Reuters reports.
  • Data security professionals have questioned Facebook's claim that the data compromised in the breach was public user profile information, Politico reports.
  • Politico reports Facebook's recent data breach exposed the personal information of EU officials, including European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Ulrich Kelber, and Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.
