The European Commission announced European regulators have received more than 95,000 complaints about potential data breaches since the EU General Data Protection Regulation went into effect, Reuters reports. European Commission Vice President Andrus Ansip, First Vice President Frans Timmermans, EU Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová and European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel said in a joint statement the complaints show citizens understand and want to exercise their data rights. “What is at stake is not only the protection of our privacy, but also the protection of our democracies and ensuring the sustainability of our data-driven economies,” the officials said in the statement.
