Politico reports EU privacy regulators have discussed the launch of a new set of guidelines to increase restrictions on facial-recognition software. A priority with the guidelines would be to redefine the data collected by facial-recognition tech as "biometric data." A change in verbiage would place the information under the "sensitive data" category of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. The GDPR requires explicit consent for sensitive data collections. The change through these proposed guidelines would hinder the use of facial recognition, as those using the technology would need to do more than post general public notices or alerts regarding the software's use.
