Fears that Belgian region Wallonia could squelch the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with Canada, European Union leadership has cautioned lawmakers that it could signal "the end of such agreements with any other country," The New York Times reports. The deal requires "unanimity among all EU members," and Belgium, in turn, requires unanimity among its regions before voting in favor. "At this stage, the document is still insufficient," said Wallonia President Paul Magnette. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker exhorted Wallonian leadership to accept the deal. "We need this trade arrangement with Canada," he said. "It is the best one we ever concluded and if we will be unable to conclude a trade arrangement with Canada, I don't see how it would be possible to have trade agreements with other parts of this world."(Registration may be required to access this story.)
