As the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence is expected to release the final version of its non-binding guidelines for the ethical use of AI, Politico reports that the EU will take a different approach to its competitors and focus on becoming a leader in providing “trustworthy” AI. “Ethics and competitiveness are intertwined, they’re dovetailed,” Pekka Ala-Pietilä, chair of the 52-member group, explained. “We need to create an environment where the use of AI is felt and seen as trustworthy.” Hoping to provide ethics as a competitive differentiator, the group is expected to produce a report next month, with a second report likely to follow in early summer.
