The European Data Protection Supervisor released an opinion in response to the European Parliament proposal for a regulation strengthening the security of identity cards of EU citizens and other documents. In it, the EDPS stated it supports the objective of the European Commission to enhance security standards but believes the proposal fails to “sufficiently justify the need to process two types of biometric data,” adding that the processing of such sensitive data “calls for close scrutiny according to a strict necessity test.” The EDPS recommends that a limit is placed on fingerprint data, allowing only a pattern or subset of the data to be stored and that no one under the age of 14 is subjected to the collection of biometric data.
