EUobserver reports on counterterrorism legislation set to become law and the concerns expressed by the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS). The EU’s Passenger Name Record Directive (PNR) is expected to be adopted by the Parliament on Thursday, but EDPS Giovanni Buttarelli said, “The establishment of a new large-scale database will require years and an unbelievable (amount) of money,” adding, “[PNR] is the first large-scale and indiscriminate collection of personal data in the history of the European Union.” He also expressed concerns that the Court of Justice of the European Union would potentially find the new directive illegal. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, however, has described the bill as “indispensible in the fight against terrorism.”
