European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski published an opinion on the European Commission’s proposed regulation on transparency and targeting for political advertising. Wiewiórowski said he welcomes the goals of the proposal, while recommending legislators consider stricter rules around online targeted advertising for political purposes and banning targeting individuals with political messages based on their online behavior. “We need to do more if we want to tackle the many risks surrounding the use of targeting and amplification techniques for political purposes,” he said.
