The European Commission released a proposal aimed at allowing law enforcement agencies to access data stored on tech companies’ servers in the U.S. and in other EU member states, The Wall Street Journal reports. The proposal is similar to the recently passed Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act in the U.S. and would force tech companies to respond to data requests within 10 days or, in more urgent cases, six hours. Tech companies would be able to challenge requests in court but would face fines for noncompliance. Internet companies are in favor of a harmonized set of rules, while privacy advocates are concerned citizens’ rights may be at risk. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
