The European Commission recently proposed new regulation designed to make it easier for law enforcement officials to gain access to data held in other EU states, reducing the response timeline from 120 days to 10, Telecompaper reports. While the proposed regulation is designed to streamline and speed up the process for law enforcement officials to access communication data, industry group EuroISPA has launched criticism for what it sees as an attempt to “privatise law enforcement” and put undue burden on service providers to produce evidence. The new European Production Order and European Preservation Order must be approved by the European Parliament and council before taking effect. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
