The Dutch agency in charge of student finance, DUO, acknowledged it violated privacy laws when it was discovered it used tracking software in their communications with students, DutchNews.nl reports. The software was designed to see whether an individual opened an email. After the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, told DUO it “very likely” violated privacy rules, the finance body announced it would suspend its use of the software. "We always assumed that what we were doing was within the boundaries of the law," a DUO spokesperson told NOS. "We don’t want to give the impression we are operating in a grey area so we are putting it [the tracking] on halt for now. We are not using any of the data at the moment.”
