The Department of Energy's DataGuard Energy Data Privacy Program is a voluntary code of conduct organizations can follow to display privacy commitments to their customers. For the last several years, the DoE has acted as steward for the program. However, the next 12 months will ultimately determine DataGuard's fate. The DoE believes DataGuard is ready to take a big leap over the next year. But privacy professionals are not sure the voluntary code of conduct is the best resource to address this new paradigm. IAPP Associate Editor Ryan Chiavetta, CIPP/US, talks to the DoE, privacy professionals and a participant of DataGuard to discuss the project’s inception, concerns surrounding the voluntary code of conduct and its future.
