There’s been plenty of discussion of late about retail tracking of smartphone locations, but GigaOM reports on a video-based analytics service rolled out by Prism Skylabs that may get a boost from a privacy feature in the next version of Apple’s mobile operating system. The proposed Apple feature would send randomized and phony MAC addresses to WiFi networks, potentially making it difficult for such retail tracking. The Prism service uses existing video cameras to gather similar customer data, but what it doesn’t do, the report states, is track individuals, and the video feed does not contain the actual customer’s image.
