The Washington Post reports documents detailing the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol show the Federal Bureau of Investigation used automatic license plate readers, facial recognition, location tracking and other technologies to help identify rioters. Evidence was also gathered from social media platforms and through geofence search warrants sent to Google. Police Executive Research Forum Executive Director Chuck Wexler said, “today it’s almost impossible not to leave your footprints somewhere,” while civil liberties groups said the technologies threaten privacy rights.
