Gizmodo reports on the issues with the Do Not Track feature seen within internet browsers. The tool was designed to function as a Do Not Call list for the internet; however, very few companies have actually obliged the requests. Yahoo and Twitter initially honored Do Not Track requests but eventually reversed course, and other organizations, such as Google and Facebook, never honored the feature since it was pitched a decade ago. Companies currently do not face any financial penalties for ignoring the feature, as opposed to a $16,000 fine for violations of the Do Not Call list. “It is, in many respects, a failed experiment,” Princeton University Assistant Computer Science Professor Jonathan Mayer said. “There’s a question of whether it’s time to declare failure, move on, and withdraw the feature from web browsers.”
