Ancestry, 23andMe and Helix announced they have formed the Coalition for Genetic Data Protection, The Hill reports. Mehlman Castagnetti Rosen & Thomas Principal and Coalition Executive Director Steve Haro said the group’s goal is to educate the U.S. Congress on industry best practices and build trust with customers of the genetic-testing companies. “As the legislative interest has risen this year on both the federal and the state level, we all found ourselves getting questions from legislators and staffers,” 23andMe Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer Kathy Hibbs said. “We’re forming the coalition in order to provide interested legislators as well as the public and press with a single voice on these issues because we do agree on the importance of these issues.” Hibbs added any company that joins the coalition must follow the group’s best practices.
