Returning from a conference overseas, Stockton, CA, Mayor Anthony R. Silva was detained by representatives of the Department of Homeland Security who not only confiscated his electronics but also made his ability to leave their custody dependent on disclosure of the devices’ passwords, Ars Technica reports. “Unfortunately, they were not willing or able to produce a search warrant or any court documents suggesting they had a legal right to take my property," Silva said. Additionally, the mayor was informed that he had no right to have a lawyer present, the report states. “I think the American people should be extremely concerned about their personal rights and privacy,” Silva said. Anonymous sources allege his detainment was in connection to an ongoing probe, the report states.
