The National Post reports a House of Commons committee has approved a long-awaited border preclearance bill. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, however, has expressed concerns that the legislation will not prevent "intrusive" violations at locations inside the country if U.S. President Donald Trump's plans to exercise "extreme vetting," which would include electronic searches at the border, proceed. A House of Commons ethics committee has initiated a study of "privacy of Canadians at airports, borders and travelling in the United States," according to the report. Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien has warned officials would be granted broad authority to demand passwords for smartphones and social media accounts. "It would appear that this policy would equally apply at preclearance locations in Canada."
