The Canadian Press reports on BC Information and Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham’s finding this week that a municipality “violated privacy rights by secretly installing surveillance software on computers used by the mayor, councillors and other city hall employees” in what Denham’s report described as the district of Saanich’s “near complete lack of awareness and understanding of the privacy provisions of BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.” Separately, a National Post column looks at Bill C-51 and data collection, suggesting the government “does not want the privacy issues that these practices raise to become the story.”
