As part of its “Life After Privacy” series, The Globe and Mail hosts today an online debate as to whether the Internet is a “threat or a gift to democracy,” featuring voices from the privacy world. Hosted by columnist Doug Saunders, the interactive back-and-forth features the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Jillian York, Big Data author Viktor Mayer-Schönberger and University of North Carolina Prof. Zeynep Tufekci, with Tufekci perhaps most succinctly summarizing the position of all three: “The new complexities of the public sphere are beyond an easy classification of good and bad.”
