Wired reports on how data-labeling services are encouraging autonomous driving companies to share prized data in an effort to help driverless cars operate better. Scale API, a startup data-labeling company, sifts through data collected by autonomous vehicles, helping the car’s software recognize particular situations and how to react. Scale CEO Alexandr Wang said, “Right now each company is so in its own lane and secretive,” adding, “In reality, these edge cases, these are things that should ... probably be shared or standardized across the industry at some point.” Wang said that when companies get better at sharing test data they can start to compete on building a car that uses data to safely drive in any situation. Scale just announced $18 million in Series B funding. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
