In an interview with InformationWeek, Doug Cutting, Cloudera chief architect and creator of Hadoop, spoke about how he thinks regulation can help address the privacy and ethical concerns that arise from the use of data. Pointing to how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration introduced regulations to address food safety fears, Cutting said regulations are now needed to quell data privacy concerns in the use of big data. "We've industrialized data," he said. "It's becoming the blood of our commerce, of our governance, of society. In the last 50 years computation has gotten so cheap and we've found more and more ways to use it."
