A Nova Scotia man raised concerns about his personal privacy when bringing his car into Canadian Tire, CBC News reports. Dan MacDonald was asked to produce his vehicle permit and insurance in order to have his tire changed. MacDonald questioned why he needed to hand over the information and was told it was a new procedure following the installation of a new computer system. When told his data would go into a central, nationwide system, MacDonald raised concerns about hackers compromising his data, adding Canadian Tire did not have the right to gather the information under the Privacy Act. A Canadian Tire spokesperson said the situation was a misunderstanding and that the company respects its customers’ privacy.
